Kimberly Colón

Coordinator of District 7 Choral Activities, Director of Choirs for Spartanburg High School

Mrs. Kimberly D. Colón is the District 7 Choral Coordinator, Director of Choirs and Fine Art Department Chair at Spartanburg High School.  At SHS, she directs the Bel Canto Singers, the Honors Chorale and the Corporation.  Prior to coming to Spartanburg High School in 2015, Kimberly was the Director of Choirs at McCracken Middle School and Whitlock Junior High Schools, both in District 7.  Kimberly holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and Choral Music Education from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and a Master of Arts from the University of Illinois, Springfield. 

Mrs. Colón, a National Board Certified Teacher, is a member of both NAfME (National Association for Music Education) and ACDA (American Choral Directors Association).  In addition to her time in the classroom, Kimberly served on the South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Standards Development Team (2010), served on the South Carolina Music Association (SCMEA) Middle School Committee (2010-13), presented at the South Carolina Association for Middle Level Education (SCAMLE) Annual State Convention on the topic of using technology to enhance music literacy in the music classroom (2015), Was a recipient of DILA (Digital Innovation in Learning Awards) Teacher Trailblazer Honorable Mention Award (2014-15), was the clinician of the Spartanburg Sings Regional Honors Choir (2017) and was the Mezzo-Soprano Soloist with the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra for their performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in May 2019.

Kimberly is starting her 16th year in District 7 and 21st year of teaching.  She resides in Simpsonville, SC with her husband and twin daughters. 

Alexa Cotran

Ms. Alexa Cotran, a Columbia, SC native, is thrilled to be a part of the Spartanburg High School team. Alexa holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with a Vocal Performance Certificate from the University of South Carolina Honors College, as well as a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. 

Prior to joining District 7, Alexa served as the choir director at Muller Road Middle School in Richland 2. She served on the SCMEA State Choral Festival Committee and was chair for the middle school portion of the Midlands Choral Performance Assessment. Alexa loves musical theatre and while at Muller Road, Alexa worked as one of the music directors for the youth theatre program at Town Theatre in Columbia, SC.  During her time at Mercer University, Alexa co-directed the Mercer University Youth Choir, and was director of the youth choir at the First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon. 

Alexa is a member of the American Choral Directors’ Association (ACDA), as well as the South Carolina Music Educators’ Association (SCMEA). If she is not rehearsing a choir or in a theatre, you can find Alexa playing with her two cats, trying new restaurants, or exploring a new city!
